Learning from Place

Positive and enduring place-making is important to all of us. If, as Sir Patrick Geddes asserted, ‘a city is more than a place in space …. it is a drama in time’, then we need to appreciate that urbanism is more than design and buildings, and create a long-term template to nurture and interact with the drama.

Learning from Place is The Academy of Urbanism’s first publication to create a body of evidence-based research of Cities, Towns, Neighbourhoods, Streets and Places and to promote the lessons that have to be learned about good urbanism and best practice. The aim is to build this body of evidence in future years, based on the annual Awards, so that they can set out what constitutes a great city, town, neighbourhood, street and place.

Written by a team of distinguished contributors, Learning from Place is an accessible and compelling book that examines the many facets of successful urbanism, so that we can understand and learn from the places that work for a wide range of people.

This book is essential reading for anyone interested in development, planning and all those that care about the places that we live in.
